CHASING GREATNESS OF SPIRIT
Your City Promdi is closely associated with the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, as one of its GOS Ambassadors.
GOS there refers to "Greatness of Spirit," which is the sum of values that made the Foundations' namesake--the late President Ramon Magsaysay--and its Ramon Magsaysay awardees work in selfless service of others.
Greatness of Spirit, for me, is loving others--loving humanity--in such a way that one is willing to go to great lengths, do seemingly impossible tasks, and hurdle boulders of knotted problems, all towards the goal of helping others live a better life. It means never seeking attention, never wanting admiration, never even considering yourself and your work worthy of praise because one sees the work as simple the fulfillment of basic responsibilities.
Your City Promdi has met about 30 RM Awardees during the Magsaysay Awards Week (that's the last week of August every year, usually). And I am always--ALWAYS--amazed at how humble they work, at how profound their ideas are, how self-effacing they are, and how they never seem to want anything for themselves. Forget passion and achievement, these awardees are heroes in every sense--touching the lives of millions--and yet they almost cannot believe that they are even worthy of any admiration, not understanding how what they are doing is beyond the normal. They are so humble and simple, and so... ordinary.
Breathe! Your City Promdi is just breathless at how awesome and inspiring these people are.
Ah, that's my next point--I'm sorry the RM Awardees' greatness sidetracked me a bit there--every time I meet a Magsaysay laureate, I come away refreshed. inspired, empowered, and full of hope. They're so ordinary, and yet they create extraordinary solutions in their communities, that it's so easy to believe that I can do it, too. That, I, too, little probinsyana, can make a little bit of difference in the world. And what a wonderful, wonderful thought that is.
As is so painfully obvious, I'm just so happy to be part of the GOS Ambassadors family.
